The mausoleum of Sultan Qaitbey, completed in 1474, is a masterpiece of Islamic art. The Sultan’s buildings in the “City of the Dead” are a high achievement of Mamluk architecture, which reached its apex during the reign of Qaitbey (1468-1496), who was a great patron of art and architecture.

At ARCHiNOS, we were fortunate to receive a grant from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation to conserve this masterpiece. On 20 July 2026, a grand opening ceremony marked the completion of the work. Present were Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Mr Sherif Fathy, chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy Mr Robert Silverman (there is currently no U.S. Ambassador in Egypt), and the Governor of Cairo Dr Ibrahim Saber Khalil, alongside officials from the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the project team, and numerous guests. Agnieszka Dobrowolska, who had directed the project, presented the work to the distinguished visitors. We hope to continue conservation work in the Sultan vast complex, to bring the whole monument back to its illustrious glory.
