“Visit Qaitbey” guided walking tour
2 March 2024
The #VisitQaitbey Guided Walking Tours organised by ARCHiNOS are popular with both Egyptians and foreigners. The visitors can appreciate the rich architectural heritage of the area, both outstanding monuments from the Mamluk period, when Egypt was the preeminent centre of the Islamic world economically, intellectually, and artistically, and from 19th – early 20th centuries when the Mamluk Revival style was seen as a manifestation of Egyptian national identity. They can also explore the unique urban and social environment of the cemetery that has always been also a residential area, and see that contrary to common misconceptions, it is not a dangerous, unsafe slum.
Fourteen walking tours took place so far, Guided by Jaroslaw Dobrowolski of ARCHiNOS. In addition, ‘Amr Abotawila conducted ten photographic and video walking tours that resulted in two major photographic/video competitions and exhibitions at the MASQ.
Social and cultural activities at the MASQ are carried out by ARCHiNOS and its sister not-for profit organisation the Sultan Foundation and are financed primarily by the Drosos Foundation and the European Union.
