When the illustrious Sultan al-Ashraf Qaitbey died in 1496, he was buried in a mausoleum that he had built more than twenty years earlier in the “City of the Dead”. As befitted the great patron of architecture, the domed mausoleum is a masterpiece of Islamic art. Being able to work on the conservation of this masterpiece with the funding from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation was a privilege. Submission of the final report on 8 December 2024 marked the completion of the two-years-long project. We continue working, primarily with E.U. funding, on other parts of Sultan Qaitbey’s complex.
