All Along the Nile Valley: An Egyptian-Sudanese Day at MASQ

25 May 2024

Various events celebrating the long history of cultural exchange between Sudan and Egypt were held at the MASQ cultural on 25 May 2024. Individual exhibitions of paintings by three Sudanese artists opened on the day, a Sultan Bazaar of Egyptian and Sudanese Handcraft was held, and a concert by a Sudanese singer followed in the afternoon.

The exhibition by the established Sudanese artist Mohamed Al-Otaybi was titled “Love and Peace” in honour of the immense effort by the vast majority of people who want to build a life in love and peace.

Reem Aljeally titled her exhibition “Garden of Fake Tulips”. Her colorful and slyly quizzical paintings created recently in Khartoum and Cairo express longing for a place and time where human personality can enjoy freedom and fulfilment.

“Aged Places” was the title of the exhibition by the self-taught Sudanese artist Khalid Abdel Rahman, who in his paintings is searching for a way to expand the limits of his perception by tracing the connections between the relics of the past and contemporary life.

On the same day, the Sultan Fair of Egyptian and Sudanese handcraft offered handmade products for sale, and a concert by a Sudanese singer Hiba al-Gazouli and her band followed in the afternoon, attended by numerous and enthusiastic audience.

The events were organised in collaboration with the al-Mahrusa Foundation.
