“Wearing Art”: Jewelery Exhibition by Marwa Zakariya at CRAFTASTIC!
2 March 2024
The exhibition opened on 2 March 2024 in the CRAFTASTIC! arts venue and crafts training centre adapted by ARCHiNOS from two previously ruinous buildings.
Marwa Zakariya is a professor in the ceramics department at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University. She stretches the boundaries of pottery and ceramic art into jewellery, mixing ceramics with brass to create beautiful and perfectly wearable art pieces. Each object in the exhibition is unique – a result of a different idea, concept, process, and finishing. The message is clear: art pieces are not only created to be displayed for view, whether in a museum or at home; they can express their soul by adding an artistic touch to our everyday life.
The exhibition was part of a series of events entitled “The Artist and Her Muse: A Legacy of Women” celebrating women artists. Other events on the same day included a handcrafts fair titled “Made for Women by Women”; unveiling of a monumental sculpture “Broken Balance” by Claudia Von Funcke; and the opening of the exhibition “Awakening the Heart” by Rana Chalabi accompanied by a Sufi dancing performance by a female team and by an exhibition of Arabic calligraphy by Hoda Hassanein.
Social and cultural activities at the MASQ are carried out by ARCHiNOS and its sister not-for profit organisation the Sultan Foundation and are financed primarily by the Drosos Foundation and the European Union.
