Monumental sculpture mounted next to the mausoleum of al-Gulshani

13 September 2020

On 13 September 2020, a monumental sculpture by the Egyptian artist Hosam Husain was mounted next to the mausoleum of al-Gulshani within the complex of Sultan Qaitbey in the Desert of the Mamluks. The building is currently used as a venue for cultural events organised by the MASQ (Maq’ad of Sultan Qaitbey) cultural hub. The artist was selected following an open call for proposals. The piece, which evokes in abstract forms both a prayer by a living person and a tombstone commemorating a deceased one, continues the line of sculptural works in the neighbourhood that reflect on the Thin Line Between Life and Death.

Social and cultural activities at the MASQ are carried out by ARCHiNOS and its sister not-for profit organisation the Sultan Foundation and are financed primarily by the Drosos Foundation and the European Union.
